School Letterman Jackets With Real Chenille and Twill
The letterman jacket is the most recognizable piece in school sportswear. We build ours with a wool-blend melton body, genuine leather or PU sleeves, ribbed trims, quilted satin lining and chenille chain-stitch lettering. Names, numbers, mascots and patches are applied in-house. Minimum order is 50 pieces.
- Wool-blend melton body
- Leather or PU sleeves
- Chenille and tackle twill lettering
- Quilted satin lining
A letterman jacket is judged on its wool body, its sleeves and its lettering
The body is cut from a 24 oz wool-blend melton, usually 70 percent wool and 30 percent nylon or polyester, which gives a dense, heavy and slightly felted surface that does not fray at the edges. The sleeves are leather or PU in a contrasting color, with a heavier cotton-lined cuff that gives support. Ribbed knit at the collar, cuffs and waistband is made from wool-acrylic with matching stripes.
Lining is a quilted satin or polyester taffeta over a light fill, giving the jacket warmth without bulk, with an inside chest pocket and two welt or snap-front pockets on the outside. Snap closures use heavy nickel or antique brass buttons, sewn through reinforced tape. Pocket openings are bar tacked and finished with leather binding on premium orders.
We make letter patches in chenille on felt backing, with chain-stitched edges, in sizes from 12 to 20 cm. Names go in script above the chest, numbers on the sleeve, and the year on the cuff. We help with layout so your design is balanced, then produce an on-body sample so proportions can be checked before the full run is cut.

What builds a lasting letterman jacket
Wool-blend melton body
Melton is heavily felted so cut edges stay crisp and wind cannot pass through. The weight keeps the shoulders structured, and the surface takes chenille lettering without sagging.
Leather or PU sleeves
Genuine cowhide sleeves age well and develop character. PU sleeves cost less, resist cracking and come in more colors. Both are lined and finished at the cuff with a wool rib.
Rib knit trim
Collar, cuffs and waistband are knitted to match your striping pattern. Elastane in the rib keeps the cuff snug, and the waist band is stitched flat so it hangs straight.
Insulating lining
Quilted satin or polyester taffeta with a light fill gives moderate warmth. Cold-weather orders can have a heavier 120 g fill. A sleeve lining in matching stripe fabric gives a finished look.

Chenille letters and mascots
Chenille is a raised, looped yarn on felt backing, chain-stitched for a hand-finished look. It is the traditional choice for school letters and mascots. We offer glitter and metallic yarn for added emphasis.
Tackle twill names and numbers
Twill letters are cut from polyester or rayon twill and stitched with a zigzag border. They are flat and sharp, which suits names and numbers on sleeves and backs. Two-layer twill creates a shadow effect.
Embroidered patches and badges
Dense embroidery on twill makes crests, club logos and awards. These can be sewn on the chest, sleeve or back, with a merrowed border to resist fraying. We keep one master file for repeat orders.
Back panel artwork
The back is the main stage for team names, mascots and years. We layout the artwork to the pattern, and can combine chenille, twill and embroidery together, adding a leather panel for contrast.
Who orders this
Letterman jackets are issued by high schools, colleges and clubs, and also sold by fashion labels reimagining the varsity look. Orders are usually for seniors, sports teams or alumni groups, with many arranged around a season end or graduation date.
- High schools issuing award jackets to athletes
- Colleges and alumni groups ordering for events
- Sports clubs rewarding captains and champions
- Fashion brands building a heritage varsity range
- Cheer, band and academic teams outfitting members
Care & durability
Letterman jackets should be dry cleaned. Wool-blend melton and leather sleeves react poorly to water and agitation. Store on a wide hanger away from heat, and brush the wool body to remove dust. Leather can be conditioned once a year.
Chenille patches are sewn with a double-stitched border, and sleeves are reinforced at the elbow seam. With sensible care the jacket lasts for decades, which is why many are kept long after graduation.
Letterman jacket questions answered
Straight answers to the questions buyers ask us most. Anything missing? Send an inquiry and we will reply within one business day.
Is the leather real cowhide?
We offer genuine cowhide sleeves at 1.0 to 1.2 mm thickness, or PU at 1.0 mm. Genuine leather gives a premium look and ages well, while PU is lighter in cost and easier in color range. We quote both.
How are letterman patches attached?
Chenille patches are sewn to the wool body with a double-stitched border. For leather panels, we use a reinforced backing layer. Heat-seal attachment is not used on wool because it can pull and lift.
Can the order include names and numbers on each jacket?
Yes. We personalize each jacket from a list you send. Names are placed on the chest or sleeve, and numbers on the back. We check the spelling list with you, and flag duplicates, before production begins.
What colors are available for the wool body?
We offer a wide range of melton colors, matched to Pantone on request. Rib trims, piping and linings are matched to the body color, and you can add stripes in up to three colors.
How do you size a team order?
We can send a size kit of sample jackets for fitting. Letterman jackets run slightly roomy for layering. Once sizes are confirmed, we add a small buffer of 5 to 10 percent for late changes.
