Raised 3D Puff Print on Heavyweight Hoodies
Puff print uses a foaming additive in the ink that expands under heat, lifting your logo or lettering into a soft, raised shape. We print puff on heavyweight fleece and control cure temperature closely, so the relief is even, the edges are clean and the effect holds up in the wash.
- Foaming ink expands under heat
- Raised, tactile logo and lettering
- 380 to 450 GSM heavyweight fleece
- Controlled cure for even height
Texture you can see and feel from across the room
Puff ink is plastisol mixed with a blowing agent. The print goes down like a normal screen print, then a heat step makes the ink expand to roughly double its height. The result is a soft, rounded surface with a slight sheen, and it reads as bold and playful at a distance.
The method rewards simple, graphic artwork. Thick lettering, solid shapes, and logos with generous spacing puff cleanly. Very fine lines or tight gaps tend to merge as the ink expands, so we adjust artwork to compensate, often by thickening strokes slightly and opening counters.
Process control is where quality comes from. Too little heat leaves the ink flat and tacky, too much makes it brittle and prone to cracking. We test every combination of ink, fleece and print thickness on offcuts, set dryer temperature and belt speed, and check height on the first pieces before the whole run goes through.

Making puff print look deliberate
Even expansion
Consistent ink thickness and a calibrated dryer produce a uniform lift across the whole design. We inspect under raking light, which exposes uneven areas that look fine in flat lighting.
Cure that lasts
Puff must be fully cured to resist cracking. We run temperature probes on the belt, test stretch and scratch resistance, and reject pieces that fail rather than pass them on.
Artwork adjustment
Fine detail expands out of shape, so we rework line weights and gaps for you. You see the adjusted version on the mockup, before any screens are made.
Fleece that supports the print
Heavy, stable fleece gives the raised ink a firm base. Thin or stretchy fabrics distort around the print, which looks cheap and stresses the ink in use.

Tonal puff
Puff ink in the same colour as the hoodie creates a subtle, premium texture. It reads as quiet from far away and rich up close, a popular choice for minimalist brands.
Contrast puff lettering
Bold colour against a dark hoodie makes lettering pop. Keep letters thick, with clear spacing, so the expanded ink keeps its shape and the words stay legible.
Puff with flat print
Combine a puff element with flat plastisol in the same design, such as a raised outline around a flat fill. This adds hierarchy and highlights the focal point.
Puff with embroidery
Raised ink beside stitched details gives a tactile mix. We sequence the processes so heat from curing does not affect thread or backing, and test on a sample.
Who orders this
Puff print is a style choice more than a cost choice, so buyers are usually designers and brands with a clear visual identity. Orders tend to be simple graphics in medium to large runs.
- Streetwear labels using raised logos as a signature detail
- Youth and campus brands wanting bold, playful spirit wear
- Sports clubs adding raised lettering to supporter hoodies
- Merch teams for artists wanting a tactile, collectible feel
- Boutique retailers creating private label statement hoodies
Care & durability
Puff print is tougher than it looks when properly cured. Wash inside out at 30 degrees and avoid tumble drying on high. Do not iron directly on the print, as heat can flatten the relief and mark the ink.
Over time, small surface cracks can appear, which is normal for thick plastisol. We reduce the risk with correct cure and by choosing stable fleece. A short care label helps customers keep the raised effect for longer.
Questions buyers ask about puff print hoodies
Straight answers to the questions buyers ask us most. Anything missing? Send an inquiry and we will reply within one business day.
How raised is the finished print?
Typically the ink expands to around twice its printed thickness, giving a soft, rounded height of roughly 1 to 2 mm. We can adjust to a gentler or stronger lift with ink thickness and cure settings.
What artwork works best for puff?
Bold, simple shapes and thick lettering. Fine lines, small text and tight gaps blur as the ink expands. We rework artwork for you, widening strokes and spacing, and show the revised design on your mockup.
Can puff be printed in multiple colours?
Yes, though each colour needs its own screen and careful registration. Overlapping puff layers can be tricky, so we usually place colours side by side or combine one puff colour with flat ink.
Does puff print crack in the wash?
Correctly cured puff resists cracking through normal washing. Poor curing, hot washes and high-heat drying are the main causes of cracks. We test cure on every run and include care guidance with the order.
Can I puff print over embroidery or patches?
We do not recommend printing over stitching or patches. Instead we place puff beside them, and apply each process in the best order. We will confirm the sequence on your sample before bulk.
